I played through about half of Resident Evil 6 with Dylan last night. It was the first time I’ve tried co-op and, honestly, it was some of the most fun I’ve had in a really long time. Most of you know the game is ridiculous. The action is so comically over the top, which usually results in groans and frustration from people who want horror and only horror from the franchise. On the other hand, Dylan and I were eating it up.
We couldn’t stop laughing at the absurdity of jumping off of your snowmobile, instead outrunning an avalanche by foot, or the fact that every single boss comes back from the dead over and over and over again never actually dying until the credits roll. We must have been in some kind of trance where most of the game’s issues and disappointments instead came off as endearing and hilarious. We made the best of it, and the experience was a fucking blast. I haven’t laughed that much in a while.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that you can usually find value in any piece of entertainment no matter how bad it is. It’s far too easy to just get angry and write off something that doesn’t meet your expectations. However, sometimes if a game can make you and your friends laugh and have a good time, it’s okay that it wasn’t everything you’d hoped for. Then again, we are the same guys who bought each of ourselves a copy of Mind Jack just to laugh at it together. So what do we know!?
