I spent a lot of time with both X-Wing and Tie Fighter growing up. I’ve flown low and fast over the hull of many Star Destroyers with guns blazing. We even had the whole joystick/throttle setup. So when I saw Seamless Entertainment’s Sol: Exodus, my heart lit up.
It’s a space combat flight sim in every way. The demo showed off a huge environment, the enemies are everywhere, it takes skill to fly and line up your shot, you have to mind your speed and lead your targets. Even that lock-on rocket fire is going to miss if you time your launch poorly or at too great a range. It was just really exciting to see a game like this back in the mix, and in speaking with one of the guys working on the project, they’re just hoping that the fans of the genre will come out and prove that this type of game is still viable. I can imagine that if this goes well, we can only expect sequels of greater quality. So, if you’re a fan of things like Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Wing Commander, or Tachyon (yes, it has the “slide” mechanic), please give this game a look. I want to see what this team can do if we keep giving them our money.
Sol: Exodus is tentatively due out in early 2012, and plans are for the initial launch to be on Steam. They hope to bring it to consoles, but those are tentative. However, they also mentioned that pricing would be in the range of typical XBL or PSN games. So, for $10-$15 (don’t hold me to that), you have to do your part to save this genre… especially if you love me. I know you love me. Check out the gameplay video below.
