We all sat down to watch the press conferences, and hoped beyond hope to see something that would really impress. There were certainly highlights, but not much that we didn’t know about. I guess we all thought Microsoft “won” or whatever. I think the reason why became clear as we worked to piece this comic together: Microsoft was the only conference without anything just laughably terrible. It wasn’t great. I think Gabe was pretty accurate in rating it a “C”. Outside of Halo 4, there wasn’t much that wowed us, but there also wasn’t much that made us say “What the fuck are they thinking?” It was very adequate and inoffensive. I guess that was enough. It was for us at least. I think for us the conferences were weighed on some kind of weird balancing scale. On one side you had The Last of Us, which was amazing. On the other side, Wonder Books. That’s going to tip your scales really hard to the “negative” side. Microsoft just had a lot of little things that all weighed about the same, with Halo tipping the scale ever so slightly in their favor.
Then I suppose there was the Resident Evil 6 trailer. It looked muddy. It looked ridiculous in all the ways you never want to be ridiculous. It was just bad. Why did the entire city explode from the fall of that plane? How did that plane not explode when it flew head-on into a building? Why did non-specific military dude jump out of the helicopter to yell at people to get into the helicopter? Why was he shooting instead of, you now, getting back in the damn helicopter? I contend it was just to make sure cars kept exploding. That was needed for effect.
