The weekend brought with it double XP in MechWarrior Online. I had planned to play a lot more than I did, but I spent a lot of time with a near crippling headache for much of Saturday. Sunday was mostly spent contemplating the fact that I was quite literally almost killed the night before (I’ll get to that in a bit). But, once I shook all that off, I rounded up a few guys and we dove back into MechWarrior Online for the first time in a few weeks.
It’s easy to put yourself in a bubble when playing MWO. Dying quickly in a game can be frustrating, but it may have been a sacrifice that allowed your teammates to get the jump on your assailants. If you die in a match, it’s easy to feel like you’re having a terrible game. In reality, yes, you’ll have to spend a few more credits to repair and reload your ‘Mech. But, if your team comes away with a win, you’ll more than make up for it in victory bonuses of XP and credits. The past two nights I noticed far fewer matches where one team just ravaged the other, resulting in a victory where only one or two ‘Mechs were lost on the winning side. It looks like they may have finally tweaked the matchmaking to a point where most games are competitive. I also noticed almost no matches where one side was loaded with assault class ‘mechs while the other carried mostly mediums and heavies. I can proudly state in the one game where we were on the wrong end of that scenario, we still managed grab a win. This iteration of MechWarrior Online is a great place for people to start jumping in. It’s balanced to a point where even if you lose, the games feel close and competitive. Also, the community has been mostly great. We did have one guy complain. Sometimes at the beginning of a match, people will fire weapons into the air just because. It looks kind of cool, I guess. Anyway, the following conversation took place on the team text channel.
Player 1: Every time you fire into the air like that, you give away our position.
Player 2: Right, because they don’t know that I spawned at our base at the very beginning of the game.
A few moments pass. *Base Under Attack* flashes across the screen.
Player 2: OH FUCK SORRY GUYS I GAVE AWAY OUR BASE’S POSITION
We had a good chuckle. For the record, the bases are in the exact same location on every map, every game.
Also, seriously, there are like 3 places to go and I didn’t sign up for this game to not find and shoot ‘mechs. I can not shoot ‘mechs in about 95% of the games I play. I’m not lacking options when it comes to violence not involving giant robots.
Just to reiterate. If you’ve been considering giving MechWarrior Online a try, this is a great time to jump in. It’s at the best point it’s been since the start of the closed beta. I suppose that’s the desired arc of any game… so good on them for actually doing it.
So, I had an interesting Saturday night. I don’t know that I want to type everything out in detail because it was a pretty unsavory experience. I got robbed at gunpoint. I’ve always wondered how I would react in that kind of situation, but I never really wanted the opportunity to find out. I managed to stay calm. I figured the more calm I was, the more calm they were, the less likely they were to shoot me. Though, they discussed doing so quite a bit. If you’ve never had a gun held to your head, I wouldn’t recommend it. Having your life be placed in the hands of two pieces of shit who likely can’t read above a third grade level isn’t exactly a comfortable place to be. They took my wallet. I had no cash on me, and I called my banks before I called the police. If you’re going to rob me, I think it’s only fair that I do everything in my power to make sure you don’t get anything from me. I know if they had used the cards I would have been refunded. But, fuck that. You mother fuckers aren’t spending any of my money. I can take some comfort in knowing that the lifestyle they’ve chosen will likely eventually end up with them dead. Best case scenario for them is prison. It’s just a matter of time. Mugging people in Texas is a job that comes with a lot of occupational hazards. People carry guns and shit here.
It could have gone much worst than it did. I walked away unharmed and just a little shaken up and angry. Seriously kids, stay in school. Don’t be thieving dickbags.
